Flood-Pulse Variability and Climate Change Effects Increase Uncertainty in Fish Yields: Revisiting Narratives of Declining Fish Catches in India’s Ganga River

چکیده
River-floodplains support a significant number of small-scale capture fisheries despite having undergone degradation due to human modification river flows by dams, pollution, and climate change. River fish production is underpinned the annual flood-pulse associated environmental changes that act as cues for spawning dispersal most species. However, studies on stock declines have focused more overfishing than hydroclimatic variability. Therefore, understanding how in variability influence fishing effort yields critical inform adaptive fisheries’ management. We investigated factors driving catch–effort dynamics India’s Ganga over two decades (2000–2020). compiled fishers’ narratives changing catches through semi-structured interviews compare them with our observed trends. Flood amplitude showed increasing variability, longer duration, earlier rise timings, linked La Niña El Niño phases. Catches per unit were correlated total yield but did not decline fishers thought, overall time. Hydroclimatic was driver local pressure. Rising uncertainty production, response altered Gangetic Plains, may be affecting behaviour underlying resource conflicts.

The effects of climate change on the distribution of an invasive fish in Iran: Gambusia holbrooki (Girard, 1859)
Today, invasive species are considered as one of the major threats to biodiversity and ecosystem functions. The suitable habitats of these species are expected to be expanded under the effects of future climate change hence it is likely to threaten the existence of native species. Consequently, identifying the current and potential distribution range of invasive species is essential for managem...
متن کاملGlobal fish production and climate change.
Current global fisheries production of approximately 160 million tons is rising as a result of increases in aquaculture production. A number of climate-related threats to both capture fisheries and aquaculture are identified, but we have low confidence in predictions of future fisheries production because of uncertainty over future global aquatic net primary production and the transfer of this ...

In this study, for climate zoning and determining the effects of climate change on discharge of Jajrood River Basin, data from 9 available stations in Jajrood River Basin were used. In order to create climatic zones in the Jajrood River Basin, multivariate cluster analysis was used. To validate the data, discriminant analysis was employed. For investigating the effects of temperature and precip...

متن کاملEstuarine fish communities respond to climate variability over both river and ocean basins.
Estuaries are dynamic environments at the land-sea interface that are strongly affected by interannual climate variability. Ocean-atmosphere processes propagate into estuaries from the sea, and atmospheric processes over land propagate into estuaries from watersheds. We examined the effects of these two separate climate-driven processes on pelagic and demersal fish community structure along the...
